Hosting MTV's Spring Break show "Buff Enough"
Before I tell this story on my experience hosting a spring break show I wanted to say dreams can happen if you work hard enough for them. Real World was a dream for me as corny as it sounds it really was and I made it on the show. Then made it on 3 challenges winning one of them. But before I was on the Real World I went to Cancun with a bunch of my college buddies in 2000. This was the spring break before I tried out for The Real World. My friends and I went to Fat Tuesdays and I saw that MTV was going to be there. Now being the fan that I was I wanted to try to get on a show. I remember walking up to the table and talking to the casting directors for a show called senseless acts of Spring Break. They asked me would I do anything. I said hell yeah I'd do anything to get on MTV. They told me to come back that night that I made it to the next round. I went back that night and talked with the hosts of the shows and the directors. They told me that I made the show and I'd be eating as many jalapeno peppers as I possibly could. I was ready. It was my big day. I mean I always watched all the shows on MTV and never been on one. The next morning comes and in the pit at Fat Tuesdays I ate as many jalapeno peppers as I possibly could and lost to a girl who showed her tits. I didn't care because I got on MTV for spring break. How cool was that? The next summer I tried out for The Real World and made it. Now 3 years later I hosted a show for MTV's Spring Break at Fat Tuesdays. The same place I was a contestant in 3 years earlier. That was one of the coolest moments of my life. It goes to show you, you can make your dreams come true if you go for them and are not scared. Go into your fears. BE MIZ BABY!!!
Two weeks before I was supposed to leave for Cancun I got a call from MTV's talent guy and they said they wanted me to host a show for spring break. Of course I said hell yeah but I had to check with Studentcity.com people to make sure they'd let me do it because I was down there working for them at the same time. Luckily I didn't have to do anything on the 3 days MTV wanted to shoot so I was ready to go. I was psyched because I remember watching the spring break shows 3 years ago and wishing I could host one. Well now that dream was coming true.
I got down to Cancun a week before the show because I was hosting parties with studentcity.com. The problem was my cell phone didn't work and there wasn't internet in the hotel. So I was wondering how MTV was going to get a hold of me. I went to an internet cafe a couple days before the scheduled shooting and still no word about the show. The only thing I knew was the taping was 7,8,9 of March and that it had a basis of King and Queen of spring break. I still didn't have a script or anything. Finally the day of I got a call from the producer saying he wanted to have dinner with Coral and I to talk about the show. I'm like sweet finally I got a call and I'll actually know what I'm doing. I go to dinner with Coral and the executive producer and talked about a bunch of random things that everyone talks about. Finally we get to the details of the show. I was pumped up, this was my type of show. A road rules style competition in Cancun. Very cool. We asked if we could have our script because we'd like to be prepared for tomorrow. Well comes to find out that they didn't have a script yet but they'd have it by tomorrow morning. I said that was fine but in my head I was in a state of panic because I like to prepare so everything’s nice and perfect and we only have to take like 2 shoots instead of messing up and taking 6 or 7. I went home that night excited as well as nervous, but everyone knows I do my best when I'm nervous. BE MIZ BABY!!!
The next morning comes and we finally get our script and I look at it and of course I get all the 10 lines while Coral got the 3 liners. So I had to remember a lot more. I love Coral because she was so helpful and said she'd take some lines. But I was like I can do this. I was confident. We had about 20 minutes to memorize the stuff for the first segment. The problem was there was no makeup lady. They got mixed up as to wear they were doing the makeup so the makeup lady wasn't there. Now I'm not big on make up anyway but the rule is you're supposed to wash your hair and not put anything in it so the make up lady can do what she wants. So now Coral didn't have any makeup on and my hair was all over the place. So we made ourselves up as fast as we could and got out to do the opening scene. I was a little nervous because I really didn't have that much time to go over everything. We started and it took us a couple takes to get it perfect but everyone knows when you get it perfect once you have to do it again just to make sure. The part that sucks is when they tell you look in this camera then after you're done they were like ooops I meant the other camera. That really sucks but we got through it with ease. I really like working with Coral because I really feel we compliment one another well on the shows.
How did you guys like my shirt in the opening scene. The one that said I'm not scared Cancun 04. Ricky made that shirt for me to wear for the show. Kind of a shout out to him.
After the first scene we got to meet the cast but they wanted us to be professional and not socialize too much with them because it sometimes takes away from the show so of course we respected that. I looked at all the dudes and there were some really ripped dudes. The girls were really nice to look at as well.
We had another 20 minutes to memorize the next scene which was in front of the cast so I had to get it done pat because I didn't want them to look at me like I was dumb as a door knob. Did anyone see that episode with Jessica Simpson when she had to take a million takes for a commercial because she couldn't remember her lines? That's what I didn't want to happen. We get in there and tell the cast what they were going to be doing. They all seemed pretty excited and they had no idea that there was a 5000 dollar cash prize. So that gave them a little more incentive to be the Buff Enough champions. Thank god we only had to do 3 takes with that one.
We broke for lunch, changed, and went right into the pairing of the couples. God I felt sorry for the girls in this one because they had to lick the whip cream off of the guys’ chest who they wanted to be their partner. Now what happens when two girls want the same guy? That's right, one of them gets a guy they didn't want and they have to lick the whip cream off of him. So we started that one and I must say Blair was a licker. That girl was done minutes before all the other girls. It was quite funny watching most of the girls spit out the whip cream. No need to ask whether they spit or swallow. Just joking. :) The girls found out that we were putting a little twist in the game. The person they licked wasn't the person they got. Instead they had the guy whose name they revealed. Now this would never go down on the RW/ RR Challenges because we don't put up with those kinds of twists. We'd bitch and moan about it for hours. This cast on the other hand didn't seem to mind.
The next day we got our scripts again the day of so that kind of sucked by hey I'm a professional so I had to get my sh*t straight. Their first game was in the pool where there were actual fans watching which was cool. I always do better when theirs a lot of people watching. Isn't that weird? Most people hate public speaking but I must say I'd rather do it in front of a million people then 10. So they had to do the Mayan treasure dive. Here's what you didn't see. I was supposed to start the girls off then Coral would do the guys. Before every game we have to go to each individual person and make sure they understand. This takes a long time because the cast usually has a lot of questions about the game. I know the games seem simple enough but let me tell you, when you put money on the line you think of any question possible. So as soon as I was about to say go the slate guy says go which he was referring to the camera to start taping but the cast went on his go and not mine. Boy did our director get pissed because it was hot and we had a lot to do and now we had to start over. We did it over again after another talk. When the girls went I must say Blair was under water for a good couple minutes after all the other girls. So I thought she was going to win. The guys went next and really didn't have to go because the girls cleaned out the pool. That's why it looks like the guys got just about nothing. Eric and Crystal end up winning and they sent Joanna and Jon home. Probably a smart move but now they are going to have to watch their ass because they're next. They got pampered which was very funny to watch because it was so staged. This show wasn't like the RW/ RR Challenges because this cast actually had to do things. Like go out, cook for each other, and be at a certain place at a certain time. On the Challenges we don't ever get told we have to go out to a club. Like a lot of this stuff was staged and on the challenges about 5% of it is staged the rest is real. I don't like being told what to do because it takes away from who they are. However on this type of show which only airs once for an hour I'd say you'd need stuff to be staged just to make it more interesting. I felt bad for the cast because it seemed after every game we threw another curve ball at them. I'd be a lot more pissed then what they were.
The cocoanut game was such a fun game to watch because the people I thought would do well did horrible and the ones I thought would do badly ended up taking it. I thought Bradford and Blair were the team to beat in this competition. Blair seemed really competitive and Bradford was rock solid but they ended up in last place. Before the game Coral and I had to explain the rules and I must say I was having the worst time saying wheel barrel. It'd always come out as something like wheel barrel luckily we got it done though. It was quite funny to watch me trying to say it. I found out that I was talking to fast. You know when you're nervous and your mind is racing so you talk faster. The key is to slow everything down and you'll be fine. Anyways we spit out what they had to do. They did the game and Rapheal and Kendra ended up winning the whole thing. They eliminated Eric and Jackie. This game had so many turns in it because all the jacked dudes are going home first.
The next day finally Coral and I actually had our scripts the day before so we could actually memorize what we had to say. We only had to take 2 takes each time and that was just to get different camera angles. We rocked it. So onto the game of building a boat out of card board and taking it across the pool. In the beginning Blair and Bradford knew exactly what they wanted and went right to work. Rapheal and Kendra took a little longer but finally got on the same page. Kyle and Crystal took at least 20 minutes of strategizing before they even started. Remember they only had an hour so I thought Kyle and Crystal weren't even going to get done. I kept getting in their and asking so many questions like what's the name of the boat, how do you think you've doing, how's the other team. I was trying to get them to talk sh*t about each others boats. It happened a little. Kyle and Crystal copied Raphael and Kendra’s idea which angered them a bit. Kyle and Kendra named their boat POS which stood for piece of shit. How funny is that? They were arguing and definitely weren't on the same page. When it was all done. Blair and Bradford's boat looked amazing. They made big paddles and that thing looked like it was going to war. The other two looked the same but I must say everyone thought Blair and Bradford were going to win. They start and immediately Blair and Bradford's boat sunk. Kyle and Crystal the underdogs ended up winning on POS. That's funny in my mind. They eliminated Bradford and Blair which was very smart. I had Bradford and Blair winning the whole thing and Kyle and Crystal being gone first. So it just goes to show you anything could happen in this game.
For the final competition we went to Fat Tuesday's where there were a good 1000 people there to watch the contestants go for 5000 dollars. I loved the fact that there were a lot of people I asked them to give me a microphone that works because the ones we were holding were props. So I get on the stage and give them a little Miz promo. The crowd went nuts. It was great. Once again it only took Coral and I once to get two perfect takes. I fed off the crowd. Now onto the game where the girls had to go first and peddle as fast as they could to pop the others balloon. Here's what you didn’t see. We had to do it 3 f*cking times. The first time they tied the balloon around the line so that Crystal couldn't peddle. The next time the line burned the through the balloon to make it splash. It sucks when you have to tell someone sorry you didn't win because we had a malfunction. I know we hate it when we're on the RW RR Challenges and that happens. It's no ones fault but it still sucks. Finally on the third try we had our winner- Kendra. Now Rapheal thought he'd won as well but of course we threw another curve ball. We let Kendra decide who got the other half. They went through three rounds and I couldn't believe my ears when I heard her pick Kyle. I mean Rapheal and Kendra were the only team to make it all the way from the beginning together and they seemed liked they got along really well. Then she chose Kyle instead of her partner thought out the week. What the hell? If I was Rapheal I would've went off. The crowd was more behind Kyle though in Kendra's defense. But still that's your partner. Plus during the pleading he should've just said I'm your partner we did this together but he went with the, hey baby routine. He was nervous so I understand. Kyle and Kendra ended up winning the $5000. I must say I thought Kyle was the underdog. If you looked at him compared to all the other guys he was significantly smaller but big things come in small packages I guess. Good job to Kendra and Kyle and thanks to the cast and crew of Buff Enough I had an awesome time meeting and hanging with all of you.
My only complaint is what the hell was up with my voice not matching my mouth in some of the scenes. I don't know if that's my fault or editing or was it just too hard to do it at Fat Tuesdays with all the noises. I don't know it's no big deal. I just like to make a good impression whenever I venture out and do something new. Hosting wasn't totally new but I've only done it a couple times so I really like everything to be perfect. Also after I thought I was done Coral and I had to do 2 VJP's which are those spots introducing the show. Like hey thanks Quaddus I'm here in Cancun hosting a show check it out. The thing was it was long as hell and the sunlight was going. So we had to memorize it in a matter of minutes and of course they gave me all the lines so once again I was in a panic. We busted them out thank god we were finally done. Any ways I really thought the crew did an amazing job editing and getting the show ready especially with only 2 weeks to do it. That's really rough. They worked around the clock to get it done. I hope you all liked it. Big thanks to everyone at MTV for giving me the opportunity to do the show.
